Megan found the towels she had unpacked earlier and swathed one around herself but the room was spinning and she was thankful to reach the bed.

‘Megan?’ Ruth whispered. ‘Are you all right?’

‘Sorry. I didn’t mean to disturb you. I…’ She couldn’t stifle a groan as the cramps gripped her. She felt an alarming flow of blood. Ruth got out of bed and switched on the light. She was dismayed at Megan’s pallor and the tension around her mouth.

‘Is it the baby? Is something wrong?’ she asked anxiously.

‘I-I’m bleeding a bit,’ Megan admitted reluctantly. ‘Could you get me another towel from the bathroom please? I think it’s better if I stay as still. Maybe it will stop.’

‘Don’t you think I should call the doctor?’

‘No! N-no… Anyway we don’t have a doctor here yet.’ Ruth brought the towel but she was shocked as she removed the one Megan had already used.

‘I think I should call an ambulance. It’s a threatened miscarriage, isn’t it?’

‘I-I just want to lie still and quiet,’ Megan said on a moan.

‘I’ll go and rake up the fire and see if I can boil the kettle.’ Ruth was frowning. ‘We ought to let Steven know…’

‘No! Please Ruth. You mustn’t. It’s the middle of the night and he has so much work to do. If – if I can lie still perhaps it will be all right…’ In her heart she knew it would not. So did Ruth. She pulled a cardigan over her nightdress and shoved her bare feet into her shoes. Her footsteps sounded loud and echoing down the bare wooden stairs. She shuddered. The house seemed big and creepy at night. She hoped Megan would forgive her for what she was about to do but she was desperately worried. She closed the doors behind her and lifted the telephone, asking for Langton Tower.

Katherine Palmer-Farr answered eventually sounding sleepy and irritable.

‘Is Lindsey there please? Lindsey Gray?’

‘Is that the hospital? He’s supposed to be off…’

‘N-no. Please, it’s urgent. Tell him it’s Ruth and it’s about Megan. We’re at Bengairney.’

‘Yes I know. I’ll get him.’

‘Ruth?’ Lindsey knew it must be urgent for Ruth to phone him at all, especially during the night. He barely waited to pull on his trousers before he was running down the stairs to the hall.

‘Ruth? What is it?’

‘Oh Lint, thank goodness. It’s Megan. I think she’s having a miscarriage. She’s losing a lot of blood but she doesn’t want me to call an ambulance. They don’t have a doctor yet. I don’t know what to do. I’m terribly worried.’

‘Of course you are. I’d no idea she was…’

‘No, their parents don’t know. Please help me…’

‘I’ll telephone an ambulance right away. I’ll be with you before it arrives. I’m no expert in such things but try to keep her still and calm. Don’t tell her about the ambulance until I get there. And Ruth…thanks for trusting me.’ He put the phone down and dialled for an ambulance.

Ruth stirred the embers of the fire and added sticks gradually until it was well alight, then she carefully added some coal.
